One of the most well-known uses of star anise is the traditional Provencal pastis drink. Star anise is also used in an Asian formula, among other things. In Finland, star anise seasones mulled wine in winter, and it is also well suited for seasoning punches, jams and other preserves.
Star anise is grown on a tree that grows its trunk for six years before it begins to bear fruit. Star anise differs quite a bit from aniseed, but the taste is very similar in both.
