The chili variety that made the small village of Espelette famous is from the French Pyrenees, the Basque Country. It is an integral part of Basque cuisine and has found its way into the spice cabinets of home and professional chefs around the world. Espelette chili gives food a warm kick without, however, a burning sensation in the mouth. It also has a hint of sweetness.

Description
The French Espelette chilli is a genuine, AOP-labelled, popular Espelette chilli. It is no stronger than pepper, and has replaced pepper in Basque cuisine for five centuries.
Nowadays, it can be found in chocolate, jelly and as a flavouring for roasted almonds. Espelette chillies are used in traditional Basque dishes such as quenelle fish sticks and piperade tomato and paprika eggs.
Every year on the fourth weekend in October, Espelette celebrates the village's name day.
